Clemente is very poetic in his extremely sensitive approach of ambivalences, opportunities, joys, despairs and desires of individual human experience that he explores. He has a timelessness of artistic craft.
Clemente focuses on Palimpsest, starting with the ancient documents of medieval times, patchwork of “writing beneath the writing”, as parchment was very expensive, people would reuse the same script. The 19th century myriad of palimpsest depicted timeless symbols, myths and cultures of overlapping, fragmented image, in order to create something new. Erasing in order to underscore, in term of both a appearance and content. Clemente plays a role as an archaeologist of the history of consciousness (memory). The travelling of time within an expressive, tormented, bruising of experience, shown through pools of watercolour imagery.
Clementes definition of palimpsest starts from the original story of a text being erased and rewritten, layering and fragmenting the narrative that rewrites itself as it goes along. Palimpsest is ancient, complicated and hard to approach.
There’s something enigmatic about the story of the palimpsest, about the story of a text that gets erased and rewritten. The layering was attractive to me then and remains now, resonating the view I have of my work as a fragmented narrative that rewrites itself as it goes along. To be able to shift a view of your own as well as your viewers.
Do any of us truly know the meaning and use of a palimpsest? How useful is it in the practicality of reality? Or do we desire to keep it as a philosophical subject to reconnect our consciousness. I have no true definition of palimpsest apart from the words “erasure”, “deconstruction” and “rewritten”. Why I’ve grown a attractive to this I’m not quite sure yet, and whether ill write my dissertation based on it, I don’t know.
