Elling creates stimulations of experiences in one vision. We could see this as a over stimulating creation. There are eruptions of paint creating erasures and emendations. There is a history of palimpsest, layer upon layer with actions and reactions, setback and advance, rebuke and forgiveness.
“To encounter “palimpsest” is very much like flying through obscured cloud and touching down at the same instant. It’s made of similar stuff: disorientation, beauty, terror.”
We could see palimpsest as half a dozen of minds all at work. Definitely linking back to the way I work through broad open aspects of context, skills and ideas.
Elling is a master of mystery, with disorientation, dynamics, creating new layers of complexitys. Blocking the possible beauty to one eye, but creating a new vision to the other.
Elling works with inspiration from Frank O’Hara’s poems,
Have you forgotten what we were like then
when we were still first rate
and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth
it’s no use worrying about Time
but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves
and turned some sharp corners
the whole pasture looked like our meal
we didn’t need speedometers
we could manage cocktails out of ice and water
I wouldn’t want to be faster
or greener than now if you were with me O you
were the best of all my days
Gerhard Richter connects to layers as an abstract expressionist . I feel this links to my engagement of sandpaper on ceramics alike to Ken Price.
